Founded on the idea that you don’t have to sacrifice quality or ethics to make an affordable shoe, Beckett Simonon is a leader in the fashion industry. They create gorgeous handcrafted leather goods, including shoes, boots, sneakers, and accessories – but these aren’t just any products. Instead of prescribing to traditional retail systems, Beckett Simonon has found a way to make responsibility, ethics, craftsmanship, and top-tier customer service accessible.
I recently ordered the beautiful Logan backpack from Beckett Simonon and absolutely loved the buying experience, and the backpack!
How the Shoe and Accessory Making Process Works at Beckett Simonon
Beckett Simonon shoes and accessories are made to order. To start, you can browse their catalog of versatile, classic designs. Once you’ve made your selection and placed an order, they get to work making your item.
Throughout the production process, you get updates as they create a high-quality piece just for you. Beckett Simonon’s master shoemaker has over 40 years of experience in his specialty. Although you might wait longer than the instant gratification of traditional retail, you get so much more and for a more affordable price tag.
Once your order is ready, it’s shipped directly to you. Beckett Simonon is able to cut costs by skipping the middle man. Rather than working with a third-party retailer who hikes the prices up, the brand sells exclusively online. They pass these savings onto you, without slacking on the quality.
Each leather good is made by experienced artisans at their studio in Bogota, Colombia. To ensure each shoe has the perfect fit, Beckett Simonon has created their own lasts – which is the term for a foot-shaped mold – based on years of customer feedback. This proprietary mold ensures lasting comfort. They source their leather from long-standing tanneries in Argentina and Italy.
Beckett Simonon uses only traditional shoe-making techniques to guarantee longevity. They sand, wax, and hand polish shoe uppers to create the perfect finishings. Hidden interior brass grommets reinforce the eyelets without impacting style.
Responsibility at Beckett Simonon
Environmental and social responsibility is at the core of everything Beckett Simonon does. By designing products that are both timeless and adaptable, you get much more wear than you would from any shoes on the shelf at a fast-fashion retailer.
They carefully select material suppliers who commit their process to responsible chemical, waste, and water management. Their dyes, waxes, and water-based solvents are 100% natural. Between the design, materials, and meticulous craftsmanship, these products are made to last.
Beckett Simonon goes to great lengths to ensure their craftspeople are well taken care of. Just as they want to create a responsible product, their employees must be able to sustain their lifestyles. The company provides fair wages, safe working conditions, health insurance, paid vacation, and health insurance to its employees.
Since each accessory and pair of shoes are made to order, the process takes some time. Beckett Simonon doesn’t leave you hanging – they provide updates throughout the process. The updates include notes on where your order is in the production process – from choosing the leather to cutting the pieces, onto assembly and finishings.
They note any updates on the timeline and include videos of the process so you can see exactly what conditions your product is being made in.
They also provide ample opportunity to contact the team at Beckett Simonon, so you’re never left in the dark. In the end, you receive a product that was made just for you.
My Experience Ordering the Logan Backpack
I’ve been looking for ages for a nice backpack that doesn’t have an ultra-high price tag. I wanted a backpack that’s large enough to hold a laptop that I can use for traveling, going to work, and day-to-day outings. I was so excited when I found the gorgeous Logan Backpack on Beckett Simonon’s site!
The backpack comes in classic black and tan colors, I ordered the tan. Since the brand sells directly to consumers, the backpack is less expensive by far than it would be on a regular retail site. You can also use Afterpay to pay for it in installments. It has a beautifully clean and timeless look with two main pockets and comfortable padded straps. It’s made from full-grain leather sourced from ecological Gold-Rated tannery Mastrotto.
I loved receiving updates about the manufacturing process of making my backpack after I ordered it! In regular email updates, I learned about the sourcing of the materials and each step of making my backpack in Colombia.
The emails also included personal stories and video interviews of the craftspeople who carefully handcrafted the backpack. Learning all about the people and process behind the backpack makes the item so much more special to me. It took about a month for the Logan backpack to arrive, and it was certainly worth the wait!
“Our ethos is to give the craftspeople the opportunity to use their talent, and create something special. ”
