10 Eco Friendly and Natural Mattresses for a Better Night’s Sleep

From firmness to size to brand, there are a lot of factors that go into choosing the perfect mattress ― is sustainability also on your list of priorities?

While some mattresses might feel comfortable to the touch, non-eco-friendly mattresses usually contain formaldehyde, benzene, flame retardants, and other chemicals that have been linked to cancer, infertility, and other health issues.

A good night’s rest shouldn’t wreak havoc on your health, or the planet! I just moved into my new apartment in Honolulu, so I took the opportunity to do some research into all the different mattress options available.

I’ve rounded up 10 of the most eco-friendly and natural mattresses. Ultimately I chose to buy a mattress from Tuft & Needle, which I’m very happy with! More about why I decided to go with a T&N mattress below…

Their entire Original mattress has received the GREENGUARD Gold Certification, along with Intertek’s Clean Air Certification. They’ve also made social responsibility a core focus, with more than $9 million in mattress donations going into communities.

After comparing all of the amazing options above, I ultimately went with the Tuft & Needle mattress for a few reasons. One, I’ve slept on one before so I know I like it. I have a history of back pain and find that this mattress is extremely comfortable for me. Two, it ships rolled up in a box to your doorstop and is super easy to open up on your own, which is important for me living here in the middle of the ocean in Hawaii. Three, the price. After reading a lot of reviews and comparing the options, I couldn’t justify paying more for a mattress at this point in my life. However, depending on what aspects of sustainability and materials are important to you, or if you’re looking for a luxury option, you may find that paying more for one of the above mattresses fits your needs better.
